  1. This interested me Leonard, as your poems always do, and the mood is subtle and infectious – but may I ask you what you mean by ‘standing eight’? It is clearly significant but doesn’t convey anything to me personally.

    • A standing eight count is a boxing term which is applied when a referee stops a fight and gives a boxer who is being badly beaten an eight second reprieve while he judges whether or not to let the fight continue. It’s a sort of time out in boxing but only used when one boxer looks like he might not be able to continue. This gives him a break to get his wind.
