every morning
at 5am
I rise to cries
f
rom the cat
with one torn ear
who I call
Jake
who has adopted me
or me him
the issue unclear
but the feeding
established
a routine
and though
others join him
he is the one
that gets my attention
for life
has not been kind
to this survivor
and I now
have been chosen
as a stand-in
for a benevolent
host
in this unkind
world
My “Celia” says; Meow..!!” (that’s very kind of you) 😉
Thanks. My Noir says hi back but Jake doesn’t speak much; he just rubs against me and lets me pet him.
Wow! Now that is a cat with character! We’ve got a one-eyed one that hangs with us. You can’t tame him, but he certainly seems to enjoy human company in small doses.
I’d try bringing him in but my 7 year old cat Noir gets spooked when the feral cats come to the door. Do you feed their one-eyed cat?
I do feed him. Unfortunately, I can’t bring him in because our spunky Jack Russell/ dachshund/chihuahua would love to snack on him. Although I try to convince myself that one-eyed cat prefers to roam free, I can’t help but think he’d love to snuggle up on a blanket in fron of our heater.
I know the feeling. Unfortunately there are so many strays here that it’s heartbreaking.
I’m glad he chose you Leonard…
And cats do the choosing all right.
Good for Jake. And good for you. He’s definitely a worthy subject of one of your poems!
Thanks, except I don’t think he’s interested in poetry. Just the dry cereal I leave out for him. He’s very focused in that way.
