At an Old Friend’s Grave by Ma Dai (translation)

another translation by Mary Tang from the Chinese on her blog Life is But This

Life is But This 命

Ma Dai (799 -869) was a Tang Dynasty poet whose work was included in the famous anthology Three Hundred Tang Poems of the eighteenth century.

At an Old Friend’s Grave by Ma Dai

I remember your burial like yesterday

The tree by your grave has grown tall

Knowing of those who will follow you

All efforts by every man will be in vain

過亡友墓。馬戴

憶昨送君葬,今看墳樹高。

尋思後期者,隻是益生勞。

A Falling Leaf by Kong Shao An (translation)

another of Mary Tang’s translations from the Chinese on her blog Life is But This

Life is But This 命

A Tang Dynasty poem by Kong Shao An (577 – 622):

A Falling Leaf by Kong Shao An

A falling leaf forewarns an early autumn

Alone it drifts like a wanderer’s spirit

It flips and it flits but it refuses to drop

As if to say that it’s yearning to stay

落葉。孔紹安

早秋驚落葉,飄零似客心。

翻飛未肯下,猶言惜故林。
