      • Yes, one of my close friends gave me a book with good translation of many well known ancient poems as a going away present, but it’s almost always bitter sweet and must be read with a box of tissues handy as its intensely moving. Much about China tends to be bitter sweet but I love it – my second home. (In addition to my 4 years in China I spent 8 in Hong Kong and 3 in Taiwan)

  1. The Bamboo Songs are not meant to be sad. They’re from folk songs sung by country girls and are meant to be bright and lively. The lyrics may seem sad but the message really is: ” it’ll break my heart if you don’t love me” – it’s meant to be seductive. The scenario is imagined. If you’re a country/western fan you would understand.
