In Kate's World
I love Chinese poetry so deep, such sad beauty and understanding of nature. (Lived there for 4 years.)
You have a deep appreciation of it then.
Yes, one of my close friends gave me a book with good translation of many well known ancient poems as a going away present, but it’s almost always bitter sweet and must be read with a box of tissues handy as its intensely moving. Much about China tends to be bitter sweet but I love it – my second home. (In addition to my 4 years in China I spent 8 in Hong Kong and 3 in Taiwan)
Another expat only in a afferent part of the world. Did the book have multiple translators or just one? The title?
Two translators but it seems they worked together.
The Bamboo Songs are not meant to be sad. They’re from folk songs sung by country girls and are meant to be bright and lively. The lyrics may seem sad but the message really is: ” it’ll break my heart if you don’t love me” – it’s meant to be seductive. The scenario is imagined. If you’re a country/western fan you would understand.
Thanks for sharing that.
That is my reading of it; one must allow others to have their own interpretations.
