one walks

September 7, 2015 / zdunno03 / 4 Comments

one walks
gingerly
through the swamps
of the past
seeking
solid ground
on which
to build
a future

Spring flowers, Autumn moons,
Water lilies still carry
Away my heart like a lost
Boat. As long as I am flesh
And bone I will never find
Rest. There will never come a
Time when I will be able
To rest my emotions.

always waiting
for you

The Jackfruit by Ho Xuan Huong

I am like a jackfruit on the tree.
To taste you must plug me quick, while fresh;
the skin rough, the pulp thick, yes,
but oh, I warn you against touching–
the rich juice will gush and stain your hands.

Autumn Lines by Li Po (Li Bai)

Clean fall wind
clear fall moon

leaves heaped by the wind
leaves scattered

a cold raven
flaps slowly
from his roost

thoughts of you
fill my head

will I ever
see you again?

the ache
around my heart
gets bigger

on dancing from Rumi

September 6, 2015 / zdunno03 / 5 Comments

zdunno03's avatarLeonard Durso

Dance, when you’re broken open.
Dance, if you’ve torn the bandage off.
Dance in the middle of the fighting.
Dance in your blood.
Dance, when you’re perfectly free.

translated by Coleman Barks with John Moyne

untitled love poem by Nazım Hikmet

Snow closed the road
you weren’t there
kneeling and facing you
I gazed at your face
with my eyes closed.

Ships won’t sail, planes won’t fly
you weren’t there
across from you I was leaning on the wall
I spoke and spoke and spoke
without opening my mouth.

You weren’t there
I touched you with my hands
my hands were on your face.

as darkness descends: for Steve

September 5, 2015 / zdunno03 / 4 Comments

as the light
recedes
from your eyes
as darkness
descends
around you
only the pictures
in your mind
are left
frozen
in time

Only great poems can capture the hearts of those who don’t read;
So poets, sing! Let the God-of-Oceans fill your mouths with pearls.

O Haliz, if you are seeking the pearl of union, do this:
From tears, make yourself an ocean. . .and then dive!

translated by Thomas Rain Crowe

I'm a writer and an educator living in Istanbul, Turkey. I currently have two books published by Austin Macauley Publishers (Istanbul Days, Istanbul Nights & Rizzo's World) in the UK and three others (Night & Day, Wooing Wu, and Harry) available through amazon.com as kindles. Another mystery novel was translated into Turkish available through a publisher in Turkey. That's me as the writer. Currently I work independently as a coach/consultant in Turkey. Before this, I was a coach/consultant for managers at Petkim Petrol/Chemical Company in Izmir. I've also been the director of English language programs at five different colleges/universities: two in my native NY and three in Istanbul. That's me as the educator. I have two masters: an MFA in Creative Writing from Bowling Green University (why oh why oh why-o, did I ever go to Ohio?) and an MA in TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) from Columbia University. And besides all that, I once managed a shoe store, a warehouse, owned a literary bookstore called Intellectuals & Liars in Santa Monica, CA, worked as a professional boy scout, wrote advertising copy for radio, did summer stock as an actor, clerked in a food co-op, was a busboy for a day at Ziggy's Kosher Restaurant, sold vacuum cleaners at Gimbels, was a green attendant at Cypress Hills Cemetery and so on.
