the hawk is on patrol
moving down the aisles
up the racks
under the benches
sniffing for a lost shoe
that just won’t let go
there are thieves beating him
every time he turns his back
so he keeps whirling around suddenly
hoping to catch them
instead he looks like an overweight dancer
trying to recapture what was once his grace
but is now just his balance
