“Some people without brains do an awful lot of talking, don’t you think?”
― L. Frank Baum, writer, from The Wonderful Wizard of Oz
Mountains shine through forest breaks, bamboo hides the wall;
withered grass by small ponds, jumbled cicada cries.
White birds again and again cut across the sky;
faint scent of lotus shining pink on the water.
Beyond the village,
by old town walls,
with goosefoot cane I stroll where late sunlight turns.
Thanks to rain that fell at the third watch last night
I get another cool day in this floating world.
translated by Burton Watson
Sweep the floor, burn incense, close the door to sleep;
a mat marked like water, curtains like mist.
I dream a guest comes, wake wondering where I am,
prop open the west window on waves that meet the sky.

one walks gingerly
through the swamps
of the past
seeking solid ground
on which to build
a future
from Douglas Moore’s Art of Quotation
sleeping late
waking to wonder
where I am
this dissociation
a direct result
of a mind
too restless to stay
in any one place
for long
they go
those names
from the past
their faces fade
the sound of their voices
those smiles laughs
a frown or two
all lost in the fog
of memory
you would appear
in dreams
like the moon
always beautiful
but distant
leaving me
trickling blood inside
and as I rise
from sleep
the moon fading
from sight
like your ghost
into memory
of what was
is still
the pain in my left side
the result of carelessness
one must look
where one is stepping
rather than at the surrouındings
which blind the eye
let the winds
blow across
space and time
to brush the cheek
of an absent friend
