he comes
when melancholy sits
heavy
on my shoulders
tentatively perches
on the arm
of my chair
gently lifts
his paw
to touch my face
then settles
on my left arm
an anchor
keeping me
from floating off
into space
he comes
when melancholy sits
heavy
on my shoulders
tentatively perches
on the arm
of my chair
gently lifts
his paw
to touch my face
then settles
on my left arm
an anchor
keeping me
from floating off
into space

Excellently rare.
Thank you, Bejamin.
Pets are such a godsend. Blessings to you and your little buddy. Happy Friday ☺
Thank you. And they certainly are. Have a Happy Friday there.
Thanks! I’m off today, and it just started snowing. Gonna take it easy… No rushing 😀
That’s the perfect way to enjoy a snow day.
Love
Thank you, Nina. The cat appreciates it, too.
Best friends are good to have; floatation through a deep river.
No better friend than a pet.
There is something absolutely magical that happens when you hear yourself say “…little buddy.”
You are so right there.
So beautiful!
Thank you, Sofia. The cat, of course, is taking partial credit.
Fighting him off is no easy feat.
I just don’t try.
I know you can knoc the socks off of him if you do
I know you can knock the socks off of him
I know you can knock the socks off of him if you try
Thanks for that vote of confidence. Unfortunately he doesn’t wear socks.
I’ll knit him some 🤔😃
He’ll appreciate that. Thanks.
Beautiful and tender. You have a good friend there 🙂
Yes, he’s become one.
Melancholy is a friend, or maybe better yet a companion, who shows up at the right and wrong time, to pulls us back to the heaviness of the world. Splendidly expressed. :”then settles / on my left arm”
Thank you. It is a companion who shows up all too often these last decades.
Thankfully my dog doesn’t sit on the arm of my chair or my arm – she’s pretty big. But she does lean into me when melancholy visits; her way of anchoring me. Like the way you capture one of the many blessings of a pet-friend.
I had two dogs, both 60 pounds or so, a part shepard/collie mix and a lab and both would climb into my lap. Perhaps it’s something about me.
In all honesty, she used to climb up on furniture and slept at the bottom of my bed. However, she is now quite elderly and can’t get up on furniture or me. Thus, the lean! Also, my dog is a beagle who has no business being 58 pounds…she just likes my cooking. :o)
I miss having a dog. I’m thinking of getting one again after I return to the US.They go well with houses and my cat grew up with a dog so I think he’ll adjust again.
That’s a great idea!!
Thanks. The cat is a bit skeptical but he’ll come around, I’m sure.
where would we be without them… Love this poem
Thank you, Maureen. The cat is lying on my desk, his nose against my arm as I type this.
They always know, don’t they. Beautifully written 😊
Yes, they are so attuned to us.
So tell me, did you really name your cat Melancholy, or did he come up with it himself. Either way, it’s a lovely name. : )
No, that is a reference to the feeling that comes at times that the cat tries in his way to dispel with his presence.
I may have to adopt a new cat then, just to make use of the name. Lol.
You may, though I think it might work better on a dog. You know, those sad eyes of theirs. I may use it myself when I move back to the US and get a dog to go with this cat. But feel free to use it as you see fit.
You just might be right once again. Have a great day.
Love this – So much conveyed in so few words. Pets are awesome and one of these days when our travels slow down I’m looking forward to adding a cat or dog to our family. Anita
Thank you. And yes, pets do add another dimension to our lives.
