Did I believe I had a clear mind?
It was like the water of a river
flowing shallow over the ice. And now
that the rising water has broken
the ice, I see that what I thought
was the light is part of the dark.

Lovely.
Glad you liked it.
Thanks for posting this, L! I have read much Berry but do not recall this one. Great to encounter it for the first time, thanks to you.
I was lucky to have found his Collected Poems in one of the boxes I had stored at my brother’s house. I can’t take everything in those boxes back this trip (am limited to 3 suitcases and 2 are carry-ons) but will take this volume back with me along with some other books. He’s just too wonderful to leave behind and I am enjoying rereading these poems once again.
I first saw this poem on a bus transom on a bus on 8th avenue in NYC probably in 1975. I wrote it down and this is the first time I have found it online. thanks for posting it.
Glad I helped reconnecting you to this poem.
I chose this piece as my PhD research thesis endnote – it so beautifully captured the process!
Glad this has meaning for you. Good luck with your thesis.
