a new translation from the Chinese by Mary Tang on her blog Life is But This
One of my readers was searching for English translations of Lu You poetry so I am offering this one by the Southern Song Dynasty poet.
Avowel by Lu You (1125 – 1210)
Once I sought rank and recognition
Riding alone for ten thousand miles
Rushing to defend my country.
Somewhere that dream shattered.
Dust dimmed my worn fur pelt,
The enemies not destroyed,
My temples the frost of autumn,
Tears flowed for nought.
Never would I have seen
That my heart will persist on Tian Shan
While my body withers in Cang Chou
