From the Song Dynasty the poet and social reformist Wang An Shi (1021 – 1086) wrote:

Spring Night

The incense is ashen as the water clock drips

A cutting breeze brings bursts of piercing chill

The urge of Spring makes restless sleep as

The moon shifts the shadows of the blooms
