Life is But This 命

Yuan Mei (1716 – 1797) was a Chinese poet during the Manchurian occupation known as the Qing Dynasty.  He promoted the education of women and took on a number of female students for which he was criticised.

Note:  the moon is full on the fifteenth night of the lunar month.

The Fifteenth Night of the Twelve Month by Yuan Mei

The deep gong of the hour is advancing

As the sounds of people gradually cease

The window brightens when the lamp is out

For the moon is shinning on a day of snow

十二月十五夜。袁枚

沈沈更鼓急,漸漸人聲絕。

吹燈窗更明,月照一天雪。
