Certainly rings true today.
Unfortunately.
A great quote but I think in today’s America there is hollowness only in the hearts of the disinterested. The majority of us our overflowing with feelings of outrage and anger and the burning need to save our country from the mire. I don’t know what it was like in Walt’s day.
I think perhaps he was speaking of the period after the Civil War that saw the division that caused the war to grow even more dramatic. He was very much involved with wounded veterans and being a humanist, troubled by what he saw in the government. That same feeling exists today toward those in government now by the vast majority of us.
Perhaps I am not interpreting this very well, “hollow” indicates a lack of passion or interest.
I think it could also indicate a lack of feeling or compassion toward others.
In that context, Whitman’s quote surely relates to the present. Thank you Leonard, have a great day.
You, too.
