I suffer with this type of regret. But I lived in a way that atonement is not necessary from then on. That’s all I can do now.
That may be enough.
Wounds heal,(as you know), by forgiving and forgiveness,(even unto yourself), is the cure.
…only brings sadness…

Forgive yourself. Just when I’m at my most tormented state of regret, I remember to forgive myself.

Regret can turn your thoughts to the past of what your regret concerns but does nothing else except keep you from focusing on your present situation.
