Leonard, I never studied the Chinese or Japanese poets. You obviously have. Does Jack Kerouac have any right to claim understanding. I am a great fan of his but I don’t know whether he was talking rubbish or not in things like the dharma bums .
The Beats, including Kerouac of course, were greatly influenced by Asian thinking/poetry/art, but the one who has the best understanding of all is Gary Synder who was, by the way, the inspiration for the main character, Japhy, in Dharma Bums. Other Beats (Ginsburg, Phil Whalen, etc) also became enamored of Eastern culture and, of course, Kenneth Rexroth (a sort of father figure to the Beats) was a big influence in that way. But Synder, for my money, is the real deal.

We all have a way to go. Understanding is a neverending quest.
