I so wish I had succeeded when the Australian Army sent me do a Mandarin course. I am sure you don’t get the subtle nuances in the poems.
I must rely on the translators, some of whom lived in China or Japan and learned whichever language through diligent study. This is why I will often post different translations of the same poem.
I don’t have a quarrel with that. One of the joys of reading translations is searching for other ways that something could be said.
True. There’s an interesting book called Into English, edited by Martha Collins & Kevin Prufer (Grey Wolf Press) that has 3 different translations of 25 poems from various poets from many different languages to show how different translators translate the same poem differently. It’s worth a look if you can find it.
