a tanka: 4:25 am

the candle flickers
the ice melting in the glass
nothing seems to help
like things did to stop the past
from playing havoc with sleep

  1. i wonder whether sometimes our minds are not just in the past but in another time zone right now, revisiting the actual time of the place we shared with whoever we’re thinking of now.. It’s 12:30 am here on the East Coast, 9:30 pm in California. Part of you maybe is ready to start reading or grab a drink with a friend, or spend a few hours in front of the typewriter. You’re in the present, but in the timezone of the stuff you’re thinking on. Or maybe I just need to hit the pillow myself…

    • Maybe we’re like Billy Pilgrim: stuck in time.
I’m not sure how to get unstuck or if it’s even desirable.
The more complicated your life has been, the more stuck I guess you are.
It’s funny, but all my life I’ve been trying to get free, only to find I can never be free from myself.
