poised before the new year

Leonard Durso

I would like to have
only good memories
of this day
this time of year
but I just see hospitals
both parents dying
this first month bodes heartache
for me
so I approach January
like a door on a house
one fears might be haunted
for ghosts reside here
and though I see candlelight
a woman dancing naked
friends huddled around fondue pots
three floors of live bands
parties with casinos
and people dressed as elves
dinner at the Duck House
a woman in a tuxedo
and fishnet stockings
tap dancing her way
into my heart
there are still those ghosts
like birds of prey
waiting for another soul
to stumble to fall
in the desert
that is sometimes

  1. Today is the 10th anniversary of my mother’s death; I haven’t enjoyed a Christmas since. So I understand your feelings this time of year. Sometimes I think I’ll eventually get over my holiday aversion, but today I don’t think so.

I enjoy your poems, and look forward to more of them in 2016. And my best wishes to you on this tough time of year.

    • Thank you, Melinda. I wish you peace on this, your difficult time of year, too. And I look forward to more of your photography which I love. All the best on your side of the world.
