For the Children by Gary Snyder

The rising hills, the slopes,
of statistics
lie before us.
the steep climb
of everything, going up,
up, as we all
go down.

In the next century
or the one beyond that,
they say,
are valleys, pastures,
we can meet there in peace
if we make it.

To climb these coming crests
one word to you, to
you and your children:

stay together
leave the flowers
go light

  1. Living in Australia during ‘those years’ I got to know Kerouac through the “Dharma Bums” and Ginsberg and Lawrence Ferlinghetti but I missed out on Snyder. I know he was referred to by Kerouac as Japhy Ryder but I seem to have missed him. Thanks for bringing back a whole world of my youth.

    • Glad to be the bearer of fond memories and to introduT GENERATe one you missed. There were so many interesting poets/writers from that generation, If I had all my books here instead of in storage, I would introduce more.
