Glad Rain on a Spring Night by Du Fu (translation)

another translation from the Chinese by Mary Tang at Life is But This

Life is But This 命

Recently the deluge in Sydney spoilt my crop of figs.  Dismayed by this unseasonal Summer rain, I thought of a poem by the Tang Dynasty poet, Du Fu.  I have translated it into English as follows:

Glad Rain on a Spring Night by Du Fu

A good rain knows its season

Fostering life in Spring

Stealthily it enters the night with a breeze

Softly and silent it moistens all things

Dark clouds cover this darkened path

The only light on a boat by the river

When dawn stains red the rain soaked wet

Jin Guan City will be heavy with flowers

(c) Mary Tang 鄧許文蘭 2017

The original in Chinese:

春夜喜雨。杜甫

好雨知時節,當春乃發生。

隨風潛入夜,潤物細無聲。

野徑雲俱黑,江船火獨明。

曉看紅濕處,花重錦官城。
