The Egrets by Du Mu (translation)

Mary Tang’s newest translation on her blog Life is But This

Life is But This 命

I think of my friend Lucy when I read this poem.  The Mandarin pronunciation for egret 鷺鷥 is Lu-si and the character Lu 鷺 is part of her Chinese name.  So Lucy, this one is for you; here in English:

The Egrets by Du Mu (803 – 852)

Like a constellation of snow draped stars they take off

In a flock to fish in the shadows of the creek

Flustered they fly far and shine from the jade green hills

Like a tree of pear blossoms falling in the late breeze

(c) Mary Tang 鄧許文蘭 2017

鷺鷥。杜牧

雪衣雪發青玉觜,群捕魚兒溪影中。

驚飛遠映碧山去,一樹梨花落晚風。
